How Many Cows Would it Take to Save Mankind?

Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada: ''Civilization will collapse very soon, all over the world......our farm projects are an extremely important part of our movement. We must become self- sufficient, by growing our own grains and producing our own milk, then there will be no question of poverty. So develop these farm communities as far as possible. If these farms become successful then the whole world will be enveloped by Krishna consciousness. Krishna is the Farm Acarya, Baladev is holding a plough, and Krishna is holding the calf. The Krishna consciousness movement will go down in history as having saved mankind at its darkest hour."
Srila Prabhupada is referring to most all of Krishna consciousness persons to be relying on the cows and land. The devotees in the cities and their preaching will be supported by the mass of devotees who are self-sufficient.
I ask you my dear assembled devotees… When are we ever going to give the emphasis to this instruction, and make him proud? Not just a show farm, but a genuine dependence on the land, cows and Radha and Krishna farm… When are we going to obey the farm acarya, and the farm acarya's servant? Srila Prabhupada said 40 yrs ago that the second half of this movement will look very different from the first half. Frankly it is different, but not necessarily in a way that is good or healthy.
I believe Srila Prabhupada meant that as we develop our farms and villages, we will form towns, vibrant with Harinam Sankirtan 24/7. The devotees will be free from heartless jobs in the city, and we will display what will come to be known as the 2nd phase of the Hare Krishna Explosion. Our own towns and villages… everywhere. And thusly save mankind from its darkest hour.
But the statement above was also written 40 years ago… and we have not even one fully self-sufficient village in America. 40 years of not developing what Srila Prabhupada said will save mankind from it's darkest hour. Perhaps it's not too late, perhaps if we focus now, will might have another 40 years to catch up. And then again it may be too late… and we will not go down in history as the saviors of mankind's darkest hour. After all, Prabhupada said: "AT ANY COST, DO IT". But is it done? No. (If anyone would like a copy of this research just write to me… firstname.lastname@example.org.
In the past 40 years, millions of dollars have been collected and spent of the city projects… restaurants, fancy buildings, lawsuits, endless creative fizzled out preaching ideas… and it goes on and on for 40 years... millions. Just imagine if that money had been used to buy vast tracts of land… provide shelter for hundreds/thousands of conditioned souls, creating a synergy of people, land and cows that has never been seen before… Try to see Srila Prabhupada's vision… creating places of shelter for everyone, freedom for the modes of passion and ignorance, etc.
Nanda Maharaj had 900,000 cows, just in Vraj mandala, and thousands of gallons of milk a day. How many cows would it take to save mankind?…. Millions! We should have been thinking of vast tracks of land, everywhere, in each state… and millions of cows, millions of gallons of milk…millions of gallons of ghee, etc. And we must grow millions of bushels of wheat and grains. It sounds like it's too late to think about that doesn't it? But, stubborn as we are here at Murari, we are going to do it and are almost there in terms of personal survival and sufficiency, with no help from upper management at all… with just 12 cows… and we will try to do our best for you if, or more accurately when, the darkness comes.. We will try to feed you…. and your Deities… that is our focus… to feed the world… at least the world of devotee survivors.
It does not take much of a look at the world to understand that chaos and complete instability is just a few feet away. It's looking pretty dark out there. The devotees are in the cities… this was not supposed to be. We should already have multiple self-sufficient villages (towns) firmly established. We do not have any. A few token farms supported by Sunday guests and retreats… making a business with the cows and land…
No real emphasis has been placed on changing our lifestyle. It is not easy to transition from the city to the rugged country. But if our leaders truly thought that His Divine Grace was giving the vision of the future, we would be working like mad to develop these villages. Nothing could stop us if we truly thought that by developing these villages, we would eventually, futuristically, envelope the world in Krishna consciousness.
Well, lets say for instance, a great catastrophe is not eminent… so what? We are now living a lifestyle that gives us the spiritual freedom required to increase our sadhana and kirtan. We are no longer working for the banks… no longer wasting away in the city… what's wrong with that?
Let it be known that I am as guilty as all of my godbrothers and sisters… I am just now understanding Srila Prabhupada's statement. But nonetheless, for me it's now or never.
I don't know what it will take to make this happen, but I for one am putting my all and everything into Srila Prabhupada's warning. It's only respectful… for me it is the proper etiquette.
It may, or it may not be too late to do this, because the world is being enveloped by something, and it doesn't look like Krishna consciousness… it looks like increasing anxiety rooted in intense materialism. Yes, there are a very small per capita chanting some… but that is not what is being envisioned by his Divine Grace. The world becomes enveloped by our keen intelligence, creating a shocking contrast of lifestyle that is based in constant chanting in self-sufficient communities dotted across the landscape. That is enveloping. That is saving mankind from its darkest hour. In my opinion of course…
So we will toil away, hoping that some devotees will take this charge and help us. We are only dependent on Krishna and his devotees... no one else… at least we are that "self" sufficient. At least we are attempting.
Thank you as always… we are trying to be here for you… and we will be, to whatever extent we can.
Your servant because of his mercy… Gadidas
