ISKCON of Washington DC, located in Potomac, opened its doors to the public in 1975. Srila Prabhupada visited in 1976. The main building, a beautiful temple, is home to a very special Deity of Krishna. It is ISKCON's first Krishna Deity in America. The Deity is called Madan Mohan, and is the center of the community here. ISKCON of DC sits on 12 acres of beautiful forested land. Along with the Temple, there is a Cultural Hall, and residential and guest facilities. A creek meanders through the property, where we grow flowers and vegetables and lovingly take care of our cows. Our property is open daily from 4:30 am to 9:00 pm. Every Sunday we have a special Open House from noon to 3pm.
At ISKCON of DC we strive to act in harmony with nature and Mother Earth. We believe in a culture of respect, not just amongst humans, but towards animals, plants, and all of God's creation. Our electricity is 100% wind powered, we recycle, and grow flowers that are used in the temple. In addition to our vegetarian diet (no meat, fish, or eggs), we care for our cow as a way to express our protest against the unnecessary slaughter of millions of innocent animals for food (one of the biggest contributors to the world's environmental crisis today. We hope to increase our green initiatives this year by planting edible herbs and berries in our forest reserve, increasing our flower and vegetable garden, and rejuvenating the creek that runs through the property.
