History of ISKCON-BAHIA
The ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) was founded in 1966 in New York. But only came to Bahia in 1974 through Dhruvananda dasa, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada who lived in Hawaii, USA. He was looking for someone who spoke English to help you to preach Krsna consciousness. Through an English school arrived at the house of a young dental student named Ivan Ribeiro, who has practiced yoga and was preparing to make a trip to India, who agreed to help him. Shortly after Dhruvananda had to return to the U.S. and Ivan Ribeiro with a few more people who were interested in Krishna consciousness continued to hold meetings on Sundays in a small space in the neighborhood of Paripe. Then Ivan Ribeiro's wife suggested he write to Srila Prabhupada asked to send a representative to boost preaching here in Brazil.
Hridayananda dasa Goswami came to Brazil and opened simultaneously temples in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Later Ivan Ribeiro and his brother Sergio Ribeiro started today and are known for Dhanvantari Swami Jagad Vicitra and Prabhu, respectively. But it was only in 1991 that ISKCON-BAHIA was officially registered at the time the president of ISKCON Gaura-BAHIA was Krishna dasa, who remained in management until 1993. His successor was Vrindavana dasa who remained until 1996. Then the office was held by Aniruddha dasa who administered until 2000. Being replaced by Devananda dasa who held the position for a year. Then, the presidency was assumed by Gopa Kumara Dasa. After his departure, ISKCON Bahia was administered by the Administrative Committee, established in 1999. Currently, since 2008, ISKCON has been administered by the current president Damodara dasa.
ISKCON-BAHIA received the title of Municipal Utilities for managing Vrindavana dasa. And he received the title of State Public Utility for managing Aniruddha dasa. The winning both titles was fully articulated by Angelina Celeste, public relations ISKCON-BAHIA. Besides Paripe the temple was already in Itapuã and the Red River, then moved to where Sprout is headquartered today. However, it is still a rental property. We are working hard on the ideal of building a temple to host the ISKCON-BAHIA, a place to gather members and welcome visitors interested in learning about philosophy, religion and Vedic culture.
