A 15 day tour of Northern India I did and filmed in September of 2006, structured around a Himalayan ascent trek. Also a philanthropic mission to secure the construction by donation of a village school (project now completed) in the remote Shara Valley region of Ladakh where a special music and dance festival in our honour was given by the local beneficiaries; in fact the entire population of the valley showed up and amongst all the celebrations, we participated in an archery competition, a Ladakhi speciality.

Based at 3,600m in Ladakh's capital, Leh, we got to know many locals at the Kang-la Chen Hotel, visited Shey Palace and Thicksay Gompa as well as various monasteries around the Lamayaru and Wanla districts. We visited several orphanages to look at the kind of schooling the kids were getting and were astounded at the quality of their book-work and English skills under a highly dedicated teacher. We also rafted the Indus river down to meet the confluence with the Zanzibar. The ascent through the Kongski-la Pass, with 16 Nepalese sherpas and 10 Tibetan pack-horses, in sight of Mt Stok Kangri in the Northern Himalaya took us to a dizzying 5,100 metres where two of our party suddenly decided to get married in a Buddhist wedding ceremony conducted by our Ladakhi tour leader who also happened to be a Buddhist priest! We then visited the world-famous Buddhist festival at the enormous Hemis Gompa on the return journey, and attended the Dalai Lama's birthday party back in Leh, his "official hometown" (he wasn't there for it.) The trip concluded with the obligatory visit to Agra to visit the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal.
