Estimating the height of a tree is an important skill when felling trees if you seek to protect the surroundings from damage from the impact of the tree. You can use your goad or a stick to establish two equal legs of a right triangle, and then adjust your distance from the tree so that when you sight the base of the tree from the point where the goad meets your hand, and then sight past the tip of the goad to the top of the tree. At that point you will be standing where the top of the tree will hit the ground.
