Karsha Monastery/Gompa, the largest monastic establishment in Zanskar, is built along a steep mountainside. Only a short distance from Padum, you'll still have to climb up to the main section high above you.

Sacred dances or chhams are held yearly to cemmemorate the birthday of Tsongkha-pa, founder of the Gelukpa order, referred to as the yellow hat sect.

Today was Day 2 of the two-day festival. We found a teeny, cramped piece of ledge to sit on, settled in to watch. The roof was filled. Monks watched out of monastery windows. Latecomers tried squish into whatever "space" they could find.
